Blue Lagoon
In sapphire and jade green waters lie about 56m (185ft.) deep in this gorgeous lagoon. Once claimed as lair by pirate Tom Mallard, playground of Erol Flynn, land of writer Robin Moore, the Blue Lagoon was finally made famous by a young Brooke Sheilds in Christopher Atikins' 1980 movie. There is no sand surrounding the water. Dive in with snorkel gear, glide overtop on paddleboat, or simply immerse yourself in the combination sweet fresh and salty water from the lagoon's spring that is rumored to have aphrodisiac-like powers. Mineral spring baths and changing rooms are available. A small restaurant is open all week and hosts Sat. night reggae events. 9am-10pm $4.
Folly & Jamaican Reef Beaches
Both small beaches are within walking distance of town. Open to East Harbour, the waters may not look attractive enough to swim. Enjoy a meal of "I-Tal"(unsalted, vegetarian food), and tropical drinks on the grassy knoll. Navy Island, the hideaway of Erol Flynn, can be seen while strolling the coastline.
Frenchman's Cove
One of Port Antonio's best white-sand beaches once graced by Richard Burton & Elizabeth Taylor. Showers available. $3 to enter, 9-5pm.
San San Beach
A long narrow strip of sand is frequented by home owners nearby. Watersports equipment, lifeguards, picnic areas with grills, showers and windsurfing available. A short swim to Monkey Island proves dangerous (sea urchins) and enchanting (a good snorkeling reef) $8 between 10am and 4pm.
Winnifred Beach
Between Dragon Bay beach & Boston Bay beach lies the half-moon-shaped strip of sand called Winnifred. Natives of the islands and coral reefs abound. A boatman can take you to a secluded beach just around the headland. Jerk or "I-Tal"food. Saturday nights local reggae music and dancing. Changing rooms & toilets at no cost.
